FLORENCE, S.C. — United ’74 will host a scholarship fundraiser gala to raise funds that will be distributed to select Florence students.
This year’s gala weekend will be Friday and Saturday at the Florence-Darlington Technical College SiMT facility.
Untied ’74 is a group comprised of alumni of McClenaghan High School, South Side High School, West Florence High School and Wilson High School. Each member graduated in the class of 1974.
There will be a cookout from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday. The cookout will feature a 70s costume contest, photographs, dancing and games.
A semi-formal fundraiser gala will be held from 6 p.m.-midnight Saturday and will feature a buffet dinner and entertainment by Eric “The Magician with a Message” Anderson and caricature artist Preston Lindsay.
Anderson, a 20-year professional magician, said he will be sharing his story of growing up in foster and group homes through his magic show.
Since a small child, Anderson has been performing magic. Magic was a way for him to get out of his introverted ways and communicate, he said.
“I love doing it, but I think what (United ’74) is doing more is important than what I’m doing,” Anderson said. “The audience should expect to be very amazed while being very inspired.”
Tickets are $50 and include admittance to both the cookout and the gala.
This is the fourth year United ’74 has been a nonprofit organization raising money for scholarships, said Althea DeBarr Johnson.
“There’s a need to give back to the community,” Johnson said. “Since we were separated, we decided to come together for a purpose.”
The group has been awarding scholarships worth $1,000 to students at South Florence High School, West Florence High School and Wilson High. Students must apply for the scholarship, and worthy candidates will be selected by committee members from United ‘74.
